What is Fumed Silica?

Fumed silica, also known as pyrogenic silica, is a white, non-toxic, odorless, and amorphous inorganic fine chemical product. It is produced by the high-temperature hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride in a hydrogen-oxygen flame. Fumed silica has the characteristics of small particle size, large specific surface area, and high surface activity, and is widely used in various fields such as rubber, plastics, coatings, inks, adhesives, medicine, and food.

Functions of Fumed Silica

1.High Specific Surface Area: Fumed silica has an extremely large specific surface area, which can provide a large number of active adsorption sites, thereby enhancing the physical properties of materials.

2.Good Dispersibility: Fumed silica can be uniformly dispersed in various media to form a stable dispersion system, improving the uniformity and stability of materials.

3.Excellent Thickening Property: Fumed silica can increase the viscosity of liquids, forming a thixotropic fluid and improving the rheological properties of materials.

4.Good Reinforcing Property: Fumed silica can form chemical bonds with polymer materials such as rubber and plastics, improving the strength, hardness, and wear resistance of materials.

5.Chemical Stability: Fumed silica has good chemical stability and can resist the erosion of chemical substances such as acids, alkalis, and organic solvents.

Application Areas of Fumed Silica

1.Rubber Industry: As a reinforcing agent and filler, fumed silica can improve the strength, hardness, wear resistance, and aging resistance of rubber products, and is widely used in rubber products such as tires, hoses, tapes, and shoe soles.

2.Plastic Industry: As a thickening agent, thixotropic agent, and reinforcing agent, fumed silica can improve the processing performance, mechanical properties, and heat resistance of plastic products, and is widely used in plastic products such as engineering plastics, thermoplastics, and thermosetting plastics.

3.Coating Industry: As a rheological additive, anti-settling agent, and thickening agent, fumed silica can improve the stability, leveling property, and hiding power of coatings, and is widely used in coatings such as architectural coatings, automotive coatings, wood coatings, and industrial coatings.

4.Ink Industry: As a thickening agent, thixotropic agent, and anti-settling agent, fumed silica can improve the stability, fluidity, and printing performance of inks, and is widely used in inks such as offset inks, gravure inks, flexographic inks, and screen printing inks.

5.Adhesive Industry: As a thickening agent, thixotropic agent, and reinforcing agent, fumed silica can improve the viscosity, thixotropy, and bonding strength of adhesives, and is widely used in adhesives such as epoxy adhesives, polyurethane adhesives, acrylic adhesives, and silicone adhesives.

6.Pharmaceutical Industry: As a pharmaceutical excipient, fumed silica can improve the stability, fluidity, and bioavailability of drugs, and is widely used in pharmaceutical preparations such as tablets, capsules, granules, and injections.

7.Food Industry: As a food additive, fumed silica can improve the stability, fluidity, and taste of food, and is widely used in food such as beverages, dairy products, candies, and baked goods.
